Eric T. Caldwell, Ph.D.

Short Bio

Eric’s experience is as eclectic as it is broad. Receiving his Ph.D. in English Language & Literature from the University of Virginia, he served ten years as a professor of English at Sweet Briar College. During this time, he worked as the co-Founding Executive Director of a small international nonprofit, and led the Blue Ridge Summer Institute for Young Artists (a three-week, residential, college-credit bearing summer program for gifted high school students in the arts) for four years as Director. He also served in two vice presidential roles at The McGuffey Art Center, the largest and oldest artist-run art center in the region.

After Sweet Briar eliminated most of its academic programs in 2018, Eric departed the college to form Caldwell Communications, a company specializing in strategic multi-channel communications for nonprofits. Since that time, he has worked to vitalize and empower nonprofits in a wide variety of sectors, including environmental education, health and human services, international development, arts & culture, and primary education.

Eric presently serves as an Assistant Professor (Adj.) in the University of Lynchburg’s Master’s program in Nonprofit Leadership.

When he’s not writing content, grant prospecting, designing websites, kicking tires, or rethreading screws in the nonprofit world, he’s hiking, sculpting, walking rivers with his daughter, or supervising the growth of his very first bee hive.
